ANOTHER BABY YAM

ANOTHER BABY YAM

As Baby Glitz has me revising my opinions of what constitutes a really competetive AHRMA
machine the quest is now on for some more of these little wonders. They usually go for around
the $500.00 mark on E-bay but, as I've said before don't expect anything at that price to be
anywhere close to rideable. Much "Shade Tree" here Kemo Sabe!

Another E Bay Wonder

The next one arrives, and now it is time for something different so I decide to create a
"Rothmans Edition" Yamaha so at least I have a theme to work to. Lots of blue and gold and
recover the SM seat and replace the side decals.

As this will be a "back-up bike" I will not be going overboard on the polish or chrome but of course
it must be competition functional.

Construction begins, the bore is good so just repaint the barrel and head, the carb has been
replaced with a flange mounted Mikuni and a home made flange inlet has been made. I can only
assume the fabricator previously worked on Battleships as this appliance was not pretty and as I discovered "neither use nor ornament!"

Nice in Blue

The fabricator was also of the opinion that one color silicone does all!.... and in this day and age
gaskets are a thing of the past. I filed this lump to a better shape and cleaned it to levels normally
associated with precision watch making. All the usual bits and bobs on the engine, new points,
rewire, smaller drive sprocket, off with the pump and all the cables and junk. Cut the rear fender,
toss the airbox assembly and some intensive cleaning prior to painting.

It will be gone before Christmas...

Man, o, man these modern environmentally friendly paints are a pain. Put back the Lead! and let's
have a paint that sticks to something...... contrary to what the government thinks I seldom have
children coming up to any of my trials bike and licking the swinging arm!!

However, good old Hammerite does make paints that cover and stick so a few cans of metallic
blue and the frame is looking good. The rear shocks are longer than normal but worth a try if they
work so repaint them and we are nearly ready for rebuild.

OK, it's going

True up the wheels and some new tires and tubes, new fenders, throttle and cables and the
smaller Uni all at the ready and surrounding the Christmas tree. Strange feeling building a bike
under a Christmas tree.

Christmas morning and it's wheeled out prior to "presents and morning coffee."

It runs, I'm happy, and all is well in the World....... Merry Christmas

It goes well!
