TIME FOR A REST

Four weeks until Tucker’s and with the annoyance of the Beemer center stand still on my mind time to see how the new Apico footrests will fit on the Cub.

???????????????????????????????

The Apicos fit perfectly on the Yam using the SM hangers but when the Cub was redesigned Ray made purpose hangers for the rests I sent him. They have a longer shaft length and stick out a little further than I would like so I need to modify the system to use the new set.

???????????????????????????????

What I have

???????????????????????????????

A bit shorter and neater

Ray’s design incorporates an “adjuster” whereby as the alloy wears a plate can be moved out bringing the rest back to the horizontal and getting rid of any downward droop.

???????????????????????????????

Neat design by Ray

The shorter shanks on the Apicos I don’t think will go around the ends of the current hangers so I’m seeing some filing here as the Cub has to have the right peg upright when starting the same as a TY175.

???????????????????????????????

A bit of filing and they fit LEVEL but won’t make it to the vertical

I shall be working on this over the weekend but first the mowing ritual and some removal of the dreaded arsebine which just loves all the watering that the new plants are getting. A couple of hours of weeding the awful arsebine and time for some fettling of the new footrests.

???????????????????????????????

A few degrees up!

???????????????????????????????

Filing continues…… going up 2nd floor Hardware, Lingerie etc

???????????????????????????????

Some time later…….. Top floor Restrooms, Bar

Interesting shape which is different on both sides so each leg of the hanger needs to be filed differently as they strike the sides at different heights and angles. Right side complete after the “step by step” approach.

???????????????????????????????

Sunday, finish the arsebine weeding and start work on the left side which carries the return spring. Weeding done, what a pain!

Fit the right side, all looks good, now start on left and realize that it would be easier to get to everything with the right side off due to brake, chain tensioner, chain and just about everything else! Off comes the right again and removal of left now becomes a breeze. We learn but painfully slowly! With yesterday’s knowledge the filing takes a lot less time and is ready to go back within the hour.

???????????????????????????????

Left side complete

???????????????????????????????

Left refitted

???????????????????????????????

………. and now the right

Very pleased with the result, I thought it would take a lot longer to fabricate the existing hangers. As they say “Well now the REST is history”.

DO YOU STILL RIDE ?

A very good question I often ask myself during my summers of non stop gardening.

This year has been a first in so much that I have not been trudging round Casey’s property looking for 24 sections and cutting trails and loops. It is however the second year that we have had vandals or thieves on our property. Last year some team stole ALL our hanging baskets at the end of August and this year we have had the “frog in the hammock” stolen off the waterfalls followed by some helpful soul cutting all the rose blooms just as we were about to enjoy them!

???????????????????????????????

In the workshop Superglitz sits waiting for her first outing and the Cub is sidelined as the tank is at the welders. Still have that bloody ticking noise to cure and maybe grind a bit out of the exhaust rocker cover. I also want to change the pegs before Tucker’s but we might let that go.

I ordered a NEW pair of boots from the UK last Tuesday and was treated to the fastest trans-Atlantic crossing ever as they shipped on Wednesday and were here by midday Friday!! They actually have “waterproof” stamped on them so a full report on fact or fiction when I give them a try. I found the same fuel cock on Ebay after a good chat with Guru Ray in CA………… Ray also says he wants to build me another trials engine for the Cub over the winter with all the goodies from his vast experience and a load more power?

???????????????????????????????

Fast boots from Gaerne and arrived from the UK in 2 days!!!

???????????????????????????????

This will be a 1st !!

……. and then there is the Beemer still waiting for me to fix the stand which I might get to in the next few days. I did buy a replacement unit from Ebay and I’ve seen the video and read the book!

$_1

The Beemer stand motor at the ready.

With any luck both the Cub and Superglitz will get ridden at Tucker’s in September. I have 5 qualifying rides in my class so 1 more will do on the Saturday leaving Sunday for the Yam.

A hot morning and I’m getting tired of weeding! Maybe I’ll clean up the workshop, attend to the “ticking” and have my first look at the Beemer which needs a wash and brush up before I do anything to her.

Despite all the leaks and the annoying tick the Cub behaved well at Sipapu but the soft inlet pipe needs something harder so I’ll have a look in Cortez for a stiffer bit of radiator hose with an acceptable curve on it.

???????????????????????????????

???????????????????????????????

This could work

Still no wiser re the “tick” I’m beginning to think it might be a broken ring after all? Footrests from Apico get ordered, drop off the new fuel cock at the welders so he can pressure test and another bit of radiator hose found that should work. Tank still at the welder’s as I was determined to finish the weeding chores before getting fettling elevated to the No 1 slot.

Apicos as fitted to Superglitz

Sunday, and maybe its Beemer day if I don’t get sidelined with other tasks or visitors. Didn’t go as planned! First Brenda wants to go to the Riverfront for brunch. I had to finish clean up for a front bed and get all the cottonwood roots out of it before planting up with some colorful petunias which are on sale.

???????????????????????????????

Roots and weeds gone!

The Beemer gets a clean and one mini task of the annoying fuel cap cover gets sorted with a bit of WD40 in the plastic catch, which was gummed up. Into town but the tank is still not finished as pressure testing reveals yet another pin hole! No matter on to the garden center for those petunias only to find they have all been sold! Not my lucky day.

Gardening is now finished save for routine mowing, strimming, and weeding so time to work on the bikes without getting sidetracked.

The tank is back and well beaded along both sides but doesn’t look very pretty! Currently looking to do some sort of “cover up” job as I don’t have the tools to get it back to mirror finish.

???????????????????????????????

Well beaded along both sides

???????????????????????????????

Looking to cover up the non mirror finish

Work begins on the Beemer and the center stand is removed as per the video. Can’t understand why I’m missing a bolt? When I look at it further the unit that the “said” bolt goes into is not there?? Further investigation reveals that this piece is only there to support the exhaust but mine was changed to a Remus unit which doesn’t use one. New motor fitted and assembly refitted to the bike. Testing, light flashes …….. nothing! So I’m no wiser, have I overlooked something? is there another fuse in the system? have I bought another duff unit?   Time to consult an expert.

???????????????????????????????

Old out, new at the ready

???????????????????????????????

Ready to go back …… but nothing!

Meanwhile the new Apico pegs arrive from the UK but I’m pissed with this stand thing which should be simplicity itself but is proving to be anything but!

???????????????????????????????

NEW pegs in titanium

With the Beemer stand still unsolved I’ll be bench testing both units to see if the motors are working before doing any more. The Cub gets put back together, tank areas given a cover up job and the rest cleaned ready for Tucker’s.

MANIC WEEDING

???????????????????????????????

Finally “front of house” complete and now I can turn my attention to other areas. Managed to weed slot 12 and collect those awful fluff carriers that the Cottonwood’s have now dropped in their continual quest to truly be the plant “that keeps on giving”.

The dandelion battle seems to be won with only small pockets of resistance where I snapped a tap root. The 11 RV slots need another going over as the recent rains and 80+ temps have brought up yet more nuisance weeds in the back and a few more in the main entrance way.

Another area behind the tool shed is cleaned of weeds and then the lawn given a do over to compliment the improved center bed and waterfall area. Brenda has been sewing madly and changed the lawn swing over to yellow to match the lilies and picnic table umbrella.

Today RV slot 11 comes under the microscope then follow up around the rose bed, can’t have the thieves upset by weeds when they come to steal our blooms, … now can we?

The majority gets done and looks a lot better but its tough going as its been a long time since I’ve done that side of the property. About 1 hour to go for tomorrow which also marks the 2 weeks to go point until we are heading  back to school.

I finished up the side but now need to continue the fine work all the way down where the proposed vegetable raised bed will go. Slots 1 & 2 only need a few pullers ripped out and then some more aggressive work on 3, 4 and 5.

August 7th and another birthday goes in the books with the count at 69. So, how will the day be?   I guess a little light weeding and some minor bike fettling. A lot of weeds pulled yesterday and some watering of those remaining. My hands are pretty sore so today will be easy. Not much done as it came on to rain heavily and I was left cleaning the Tiger Cub and workshop. Yesterday was Escalante Days so as there was NO Trial this year time to watch the exploits of others and a drinking rest day.

Today, back to some weeding and routine garden work. Back row of the park finished and Sunday plan is to start the tedious weeding of the drive yet again! More watering of those weeds in the gravel gets their roots working and makes life easier to dig them out. The hoses however are saying “we quit” with leaks everywhere and having been repaired on several occasions they are going to be replaced. The best heavy duty hoses are made by Dramm but are very, very expensive!!! Finally got some through Amazon at a price nobody else can match.

???????????????????????????????

???????????????????????????????

150′ of yellow hose……. now need a hose cart

Coming into the last week or so of the bus driver’s summer break so the last 3 RV bays must get finished. More rain forecast for today but that could help with the weeding. The driveway gets it’s second do over and all the weeds, grasses and thistles are removed. All that I’m left with are 3,4 and 5. Slot 3 to finish the day with some very tedious small weeds which are the most annoying but everyone is a step closer to the finishing line.

Wednesday, and it rained overnight so conditions could be perfect for completion. Slot 3 gets finished, more dandelions get the treatment and its evening 9 ball to wrap up the day.

???????????????????????????????

Thursday and back out front for lawn mowing, some weeding of the pool area and testing of the new hoses having retired all the old ones.

Friday and the intention is to finish slots 4 & 5. They get done and now, just maybe, I can do something I want to do?

???????????????????????????????

4 done

???????????????????????????????

5 completes the weeding for 2015

Well not quite! The next request is the front garden raised bed which was built about 4 years ago and had the gorgeous purple roadside weeds transplanted and they have grown every year since. Some dianthus have been in there but are getting a bit straggly now. A couple of peonies  have produced flowers but in my opinion never look that good. A stray bit of mint has got in and smells delightful, but due to the proximity of another Cottonwood the bed is a mass of roots and takes some time to get them out before any new planting. Its a mess so more work to rectify and then some cheapo petunias for the 2015 splash of color.

???????????????????????????????

Clean and ready for some color

Off I go for a mass of petunias but on arrival at Four Seasons they are all gone? Think again Whittington! Into town and 20 viola are on sale so now another trip to Walmart, and lo, they have had another delivery so more of the lilies and a couple of big moms complete the shopping run.

???????????????????????????????

???????????????????????????????

Good enough

That completes summer gardening and weeding but now I need a monster hose reel to put 150′ on and then secure it in the light of recent thefts.

MORE GARDENING TASKS

???????????????????????????????

Work on the waterfalls, pond levelling etc, took about two weeks longer than anticipated but is now complete and time well spent. The new feature of a rear rockery with planters worked well and is  fully stocked with colorful plants.

???????????????????????????????

???????????????????????????????

???????????????????????????????

Well I like it

The center bed now needs some rectification, and a second major weed as the creeper is very persistent and will choke all the other plants left to it’s own devices. Work begins and another two full days with the hand fork and its looking a lot better. Some of the spreading fir trees are clipped back, rocks are repositioned and new plants go in.

???????????????????????????????

Relocated rocks with lilies and pinks

???????????????????????????????

Meanwhile the weed attacks are beaten back elsewhere and after all the work I seem to have the dandelion problem under control. Emerging new growth is quickly killed with “my” weed killer and their numbers are dwindling.

Another two days in the shade garden and the fountain feature gets 6 more wheelbarrow loads of rocks to give Brenda her rockery and cover all the electrics and irrigation pipes.

???????????????????????????????

Should get on the final touches of the front bed today and cutting it with the lawn knife extending the edges by about a foot along the bottom. Work continues on  the lower boundary of the bed and today its stinking hot and working with the pickaxe is bloody hard going.

Nice to see all the flowers I planted and even the portulaca has perked up and all the buds are fully open. With any luck I should finish the edging this afternoon and get the last few trays of vinca into the soil. Brenda ordered some water lilies which arrived this morning and is now busy putting them in baskets of cat litter which they will grow in as its a clay.

???????????????????????????????

???????????????????????????????

Great selection of pond lilies and marginals

The afternoon came and went and although some progress the edge is far from done. I did however get from the bottom loop up onto the upper section where life is a little easier. By 1900 I’ve had enough fun for one day with the pickaxe and rocks!

???????????????????????????????

Top edge done!

Friday and a quick run into town, check on the Cub tank, not ready, and on to Walmart. 1 gallon of paint for the new frontage boards, try the “dead & dying” section otherwise known as the garden section and find another batch of relatively cheap lilies so snap up 5 of those and 3 newly arrived salvias. Home via Four Seasons for 4 more trays of vincas which will be my last plants of the year and now with any luck finish the edge, put in some more rocks and complete the final planting. Sounds easy and would been until the storm arrives. I persist and get the edge finished. It continues raining but not too much so I suck it up and get the salvias and lilies in the ground after digging eight holes with the pickaxe. The 48 vincas can wait another day.

Saturday, International Vinca Day, a few more rocks to add then those 48 little beauties can be planted in clumps of 3 to add some vibrant color. Amazingly the Walmart salvias look very good compared to their usual moth eaten stuff and I could perhaps add a few more if I get a chance. The weekend weather is thunderstorms and heavy rain so early planting will be the plan then back to the good old weeding routine.

Some clean up to start and a few new weeds removed and the first group of vincas are in the ground. The next set are planted and it pours with rain! 6 down, 42 to go.

1200, the torrential rain stops and temps are rising. Venture out and plant the last of the vincas in some very soggy soil. Two more trips to the rock area and wheelbarrow loads are delivered, washed, and ready for layout.

???????????????????????????????

More rocks added on the lower side

???????????????????????????????

Done

Sunday Aug 2nd, forecast heavy rain all day and tonight so hopefully an early start on the last of the rock additions to the center bed and some decent photos before the deluge. So far light rain and overcast skies and generally unpleasant.

???????????????????????????????

Planting finished

A DIFFERENT SORT OF POOL

???????????????????????????????

Back from Casper and the next project needs to get underway in the shape of rectifying the waterfalls and pools in the garden. What started as a few years ago as fish pools was converted to a scenic waterfall display about 2010. All was well until the old preformed lower pool cracked. This got repaired TWICE using that “flexseal” stuff and worked well but it was losing water in one corner where all the “splash” water should have been returning to the lower pool.

???????????????????????????????

We have a WEED problem!!

???????????????????????????????

All the lower pool’s rocks have to come out

???????????????????????????????

Rocks everywhere

First up is some serious weeding! A complete pond liner is ordered and the corner can now be elevated with some sand and rock but, as destruction begins it soon becomes obvious that  all the mega big rocks will have to come out and the upper splash trap covered as well.

Casey brings in the track skid steer and the big ones get lifted out and then the clean up begins before fitting the new liner. The new liner arrives on Saturday and is laid out only to discover two areas where it has been folded have cuts?? Much discussion with Amazon and discounts etc and a liner repair kit is sent out.

???????????????????????????????

The BIG ones get the chain treatment

???????????????????????????????

???????????????????????????????

Back to the bare bones

Liner repaired, upper splash trap checked and the pools filled to determined the new edges and levels. Lower section completed and Casey is requested again for refitting the mega rocks.

???????????????????????????????

Liner repaired and in place for checking levels

???????????????????????????????

Rebuild begins

???????????????????????????????

Taking shape, lower pond area nearly complete

Large rocks are chained up and lifted into position without broken bones and other disasters. Work continues in the build phase leaving room for splash run off and positioning of hoses from the pumps to their respective falls. Power on ……….. and it appears the major pump has failed and is seized solid! No indication on the pump as to volume and lift so something that takes a 1″ pipe is sourced on Amazon and amazingly arrives the next day!! Well that’s better but need a bit more flow so buy another one and some extra hose.

By Tuesday the second pump is in place and 8 individual falls are created, all that remains is the placing of attractive rock to make it look pretty and somewhat authentic.

???????????????????????????????

Finally all back together and working

A repainted set of frogs and other memorabilia are laid out but despite our new security cameras some thieving bastard has stolen the “frog in a hammock” within the first 2 days!!!

???????????????????????????????

???????????????????????????????

Frog in a hammock

???????????????????????????????

???????????????????????????????

Now you see me……

???????????????????????????????

Now you don’t !!

With all the rocks repositioned I feel the site needs a few more plants so work begins on adding a new section, which as rocks are free only costs my labor ….. and as we know that’s dirt cheap!

???????????????????????????????

The shape is cut on the rear side of the falls

???????????????????????????????

Testing layout of the NEW rocks

???????????????????????????????

Rocks in, elevated beds created, and planted up
