TURN (the spanner) AGAIN WHITTINGTON

Now as the fabled story goes Dick Whittington was a poor boy and went to London where he had
heard the streets were paved with gold. Dick was taken in by a merchant family, the Fitzgeralds, but
was forced to sleep in a rat infested cellar. Having earnt a penny for shoe shining he bought a cat,
called Tom, who saved him from the rats. Some time later Dick got really pissed off with life in general
and walked out of London but heard the Bells chiming “Turn again Whittington, thrice Mayor of London
Town”. Dick went back and as the story goes when the Fitzgerald family sent a boat with goods for
sale Dick sent his cat Tom as virtually his only possession. Like ebay the cat sold for a fortune to the
King of the Barbary Coast who had a serious problem with mice. Dick, did indeed become very
wealthy and went on to be, as the bells had foretold, thrice Mayor of London Town. While I have no
intention of becoming the Mayor of Dolores Town once, let alone thrice the story has similarities in so
much that selling the ebay “cat” has allowed me to turn (the spanner that is, not direction) and
improve my overall happiness on the trials front.

Flush with the ebay pot of gold a flurry of ordering for parts and other goodies, and no arguments, as
it was all my crap that I sold to finance these new projects so no penny pinching from the household
budget.

Into the workshop with several mini tasks to do……… lets get the YZ bearings done so out with the
tool and out comes the first side with no problem so remove the spacer and flip over to the non
sealed one on the other side. Extractor in place ….. tap…… tap, good its moving but then, horror of
horrors, the whole bearing disintegrates and now I have the outer race stuck in the hub. This has
only happened once in the past and I’m racking my brain trying to remember how I solved the
problem. Contary to the recent published article “ITSA Moving” this one is NOT! …itsa stuck!!

Time to skin the cat, not Tom in this case, but to now find a welder and arc weld a bead on the
remains of the outer race. Just when you think things are going well !…… and now when I look at the wheel …… is it a YZ or IT ?  Reason I need to know is I’m after some new brake shoes and of course
somewhere along the line Yamaha changed their hubs and plates on certain models. Brake shoes
are everywhere on Ebay but trying to find a corresponding after market groovy shoe when you aren’t
sure what you have is problematic. Time to research the Yamaha bible courtesy of Speed & Sport,
PA and after much research the 322 number on the shoe relates to 80-82 IT models and 80/81 YZ
variants. That all translated to some EBC shoes, with the grooves called 507G so a quick purchase
there with free shipping.

More bits and bobs from TYTrials in the UK in the shape of some hi-tech Mono fork seals, not cheap,
and a cable bracket for the mono yokes.

Now time to get the oil seals, wipers and front brake cable for the Fantic set up and then the Enfield
can be finished before I attack Superglitz. Last items I’m looking for, with all my ebay loot, are some
Magicals springs for both forks and the latest exhaust from Majesty. This one has the up between the
frame pipe and supposedly a bigger bore WES middle and tail section.

ITSA MOVING

As we crash into 2012 and we are already moving right along and will soon be half way through the
month . I’m noticing its getting lighter in the evenings as I drive the school bus and about another 8
weeks we put the clocks where they should be.

On the ITSA front we have all our paperwork in for the new charter, John Holbrook is acting as
Secretary and Treasuer and has opened up a bank account on YOUR behalf to deal with the
costings. Things are moving along smoothly for our planned schedule of 5 x 2 Day events for this
coming season and we hope to have that set by the end of the month with some firm dates. For those
of you planning on joining us in this venture now is perhaps a good time to join ITSA, a mere $35.00 compared to the other org at $65. Go to www.bjracing.com  and hit the page. We will also be using
this site for event news and results and very soon we will have our own web site to boot.

Dates for the first event are 2/3 June for Bull Hollow UT, which is just down the road from Monticello
on the UT/CO border. Terrific vintage trials land, good parking, port-a-loos and trash bins on site.
Permanent MX track (not in use while we are there)….. and I’ll be the Trialsmaster for this one, and
as we used to say in the RAF….. “I have a responsible position here, anything goes wrong, I’m
responsible!” Just the 50 sections to tape ! As a bonus can you see ME in the picture ?

Plenty of good parking at Bull Hollow, can you spot me laying out ?

Another event also confirmed is Casper on 1/2 September, and if you have read my views on this
place you will know it has to be my personal favorite. If you have never been you owe it to yourself to
give it a try this year. More news on other events as they come in……….. still working on Dolores,
Turkey Rock and Roswell.

Back on the bike building front the new bearing for the TY Mono yokes arrived and will fit perfectly
without resulting to a machinists expertise.  Other bits and bobs are on my ebay “watch list” and
just waiting for the cash to roll in from the 28 items I have closing out this weekend. On that side it
seems to be going well and maybe a few bidding wars to surprize the seller at the end…… he hopes!

The YZ wheel turned up and all looks good there and the brake plate has undergone the buffing
treatment so happy with that one.

Also thinking of upgrading the exhaust system on Superglitz, bit expensive but maybe the “sales’
items will pay for it. Discovered I was one bearing short of a picnic to redo the YZ wheel so ordered a
pair of double seal 6202’s on ebay for the BIN price of $3.50 for the PAIR with free shipping !!! Now
that really is a cracking deal. They had a tracking number with them and arrived, as promised, on time
yesterday……… postage cost $3.02 ?? ……. 24 cents a bearing ?

The “other” ebay adventure was remarkable and with 28 items up for grabs you never know what will
happen. 3 out of 4 frames sold with a bit of a price war on the TY175. Normally frames don’t even get
a sniff and in the past I have chucked quite a few as the just don’t sell. The TYZ stator plate is one that
I’ve put on before and is new but never attracts a bid. The bloody thing cost me nearly $300 from Nigel
Birkett and of course fits both the TYZ and all the Scorpas. I thought my opener at $69.99 was more
than reasonable.

Pedictably the TY front guard/fender went for a good price as did the Ossa betor forks shortly to leave
for Belgium. Biggest surprize was the Ossa, well bashed, bash plate which was minding its own
business at a reasonable price of $13.50 with 2 bids. The time clicks down and in the last seconds
goes out at $61.00  ??????? now thats determined bidding! That one is going to Austria. …… never
ceases to amaze me.

So with the ebay sales done, money coming in, ITSA time to start ordering new parts to complete all
the planned projects, itsa lotta fun, itsa making me very happeeeey.

Membership fees are entirely theirs and within our “new” charter we must be a member of ITSA and will also pay a due to our own Mountain West chapter. Therefore to ride ITSA events you do not need to be a member of the AMA.ITSA will provide us with reasonable cost insurance and sanctions for those events we wish to run using their format and rules. Classes are similar in most respects with the addition of the much sought after Twinshock Class for those machines manufactured post 1979. The current 2012 Ahrma Trials Schedule forced us down this route as there were insufficent events for Trials only dedicated riders.

Two “bugs” in retro Yam colors, leader still clean, back man footing!

I know I have waxed lyrical on the subject but it is interesting to see the number of newbies on Trials
Central who have now caught the disease.  As we all know there is NO known cure and once afflicted
the patient must endure a lifetime with the problem.

For just about all diseases, other than the common cold, which I feel sure the Pharmaceutical
companies have cured, but won’t tell so they leave us in misery with Nyquil as about the only remedy
that does anything  …..  for everything else there is a drug to deal with the problem, despite the side
effects which from the advertizing are often far worse than the original problem. Not forgetting all the ridiculous diseases (so called) like RLS and Low T, and now they have another band wagon and all
its expensive remedies in “Dry Mouth” ???

So just two major illnesses to deal with, “The Common Cold” and “Trials”.  As they say about the cold
it will last about 7 days with drugs, potions, vapour rubs, syprups, lozenges and massive doses of
vitamin C or left to the bodies immune system it will last about a week…….. not so with Trials !!

While the disease in many cases is hereditary and if you are born into one of these families it is very
unlikely that you will escape its affliction. If we look globally we can see many families where this is the
case and no other medical explanation is provided……..in the UK the worst afflicted families seem to
be centered in Yorkshire where the Lampkin family have a very bad dose of the disease for decades
with all family members afflicted. Others that immediately come to mind are the Sunters, where it has
spread to the female of the species and of course brothers Bill and Mick Wilkinson and many father
and son situations like the Gaunts.

Not limited to just Yorkshire I can throw in many other examples including the Adsett brothers and of
course Tony and Mal Davis. Many other cases have been reported but these stand out as classic
examples. Further north in the wilds of Scotland three generations of the Moffat family have been so
cursed with all riding the SSDT and now Big John has become obsessed with Bultaco building.

It has spread across the globe with the Lejeunes in Belgium, Fracys in Canada and multiple
outbreaks even here in the USA. All our current US contenders have had this disease passed down
through the genes and here I offer up the Webbs, Ropers, Tuckers, Saums, Ginders, Belvoirs and Martinsons as classic examples.

From research it would seem no violent outbreaks have ever been reported in South America, The
Middle East, the Polar regions or the Falklands although some dimwit was seen racing around the
Islands in 1981.

So how is this disease passed on or contracted ? Little research seems to have  been done here
and perhaps the manufacturers should spend more money in this area rather than worry about Stop
or No Stop rules. From my studies it would seem that “conditioning” plays an all important part in the
bodies failure to recognize the first symptoms. Very often children and some adults are lured into
areas where the condition is rife and slowly but surely they are absorbed like the Borg !

“Resistance is futile……. you will be absorbed”

It often starts with children around the age of 5 upwards being dragged off by father to some major motorcycle dealership, village pub with large parking lot or a countryside village sportsground on a
Sunday morning. As most current trials do not include the roadwork of yesteryear a lot of these venues
are now in quarries, private land or some very generous farmer’s holdings. In days of yore the
unsuspecting would be treated to a vista of strange motorcycles and an even stranger bunch of
owners all dressed in drab olive green waxed Egyptian cotton, not dissimilar from a farmers shoot,
and for the mostpart all wearing the traditional “flatcap” with or without googles.

Today our unafflicted individual could be forgiven for thinking that they had been taken to some sort
of “gay meet” as seemingly normal people suddenly change into tight fitting lyrca pants and strange
helmets with peaks so far back you wonder what they are for?

Further conditioning is now enhanced by trudging uphill and down dale, up muddy banks, along wet
or dry streambeds full of rocks, gazing at mammoth climbs and descents and marvelling at these
strange people and machines whizzing about between tapes and marker cards. Some stay on, some
fall off, some struggle, others don’t, legs flail, mud is everywhere, several cuss but everybody smiles? Eventually “newbie” asks the duty dumb questions;

“What are they trying to do ?”

There now follows a blow by blow account from the handbook and our newcomer has his or hers
baptism of rules and regs. Further questions now follow;

Five ?

“Was that a 5?” etc etc ………. and finally it happens……….. the “unsuspecting” is plonked on board one
of these strange full size machines……… well if its a young child he or she can’t get off,  their feet can’t
touch the ground, and they can only just reach the full width bars…….. no matter they will grow!

“Hey yup lad, point tit tup ‘ill un gee it a squirt… an don’t sit down!”

A recent study by emminent doctors was printed in “The Lancet” and they have postulated that the
bug maybe contracted via the anal cavity by coming into contact with the seat on one of these strange machines. This would also account for manufacturers  (who may be guilty of insider trading or
industrial espionage) lowering the seat height on modern trials bikes to afflict younger and younger
children and those that we shall say are “vertically” challenged.

A very interesting concept and indeed one that would seem reasonable as once bitten the “trials
rider” never comes into contact with that “seat” again and spends his entire riding time standing up.
True, it may have become addictive and one can often see riders sitting on their machines pre start
perhaps obtaining another  “quick fix” before setting off.

Well whatever it is and however you get it,  you will have it for life.

REKINDLING THE FLAME

With a few days of spanner wrenching the dim ashes produced a little smoke from a remaining
glowing ember. The smoke soon turned to flame and now the keeness is back to an all comsuming
inferno.

Today’s project is to get up into the bowels of the workshop loft and take inventory. Things were
dumped up there in no particular order of merit when the mad scramble of the move took place in fall
2008. It will be interesting to see what I “magpied” from the previous workshop and what if anything is
still worthwhile keeping or dumping on E-bay for some future project funding…….. “one man’s trash,
another man’s treasure”

God knows how many sets of Yamaha TY 175 and 250 tripple trees or yokes I have, they seem to be everywhere, and at the back I can see a collection of frames and wheels. Can’t imagine why I kept
them all if I haven’t got the motors to go with them.

The lower workshop is now a complete tip as box after box gets emptied and its contents surveyed
and marvelled at. Currently sifting to see whats what and whether any of this stuff is saleable. Must
have 20 Yam brake plates to go with all the tripple trees, a few “A” model clutch covers and a couple
of semi finished or dismantled engines.

Anything worth keeping ?

Another day harvesting tomorrow and some intensive cleaning before entering the e-bay game again.
It never ceases to amaze me what will sell and the crazy prices some items fetch. Some good looking
bits off a MAR Ossa, forks, brake plate,  brake cable, bash plate, a few SWM Jumbo bits, aircleaner,
front fender, number board and an original set of Wassel Handlebars. Frames for TY 250A’s, TY175’s
a SWM 280, and a Montesa 242. A lot of “new” fenders I don’t remember buying, a big wide rear alloy,
set of generic reds in plastic, some whites and a TY 175/250 repo OEM style NEW !

An afternoon sifting, boxing and putting away but still a lot to do. Meanwhile the Fantic brake plate
takes a beating from the paint remover and is turned back to cast alloy.

More work with sanders and the rough cast is gone and then on with the Solvol. Dan Straka emailed
to ask what this Solvol stuff was? Well I’ve been using it since I was a kid and it used to be called
Solvol Autosol but the manufacturers have since dropped the Solvol. Sorry for any confusion. It’s bloody
good stuff and I call it  Solvol.

Now thats Solvol !

Met the machinist today and his work seemed a bit expensive to me but I might have to go down his
route if I can’t come up with anything else. Shadetree attempted to remove the bearing but so far
nothing! Shade is getting a little annoyed at being “stumped” with this one and is looking for some
divine guidance or a bigger hammer!

Having given up in disgust with the troublesome brg some good news from Jimmy as a wheel has
been found so things are all coming together nicely as long as I don’t break this alloy yoke in my new
found engineering enthusiasmn.

Shade, will not be denied this morning, and with a few strokes from the Makita, and a giant wellie
from the bigger hammer I have the worthless brg in my hand. Today we are off to Farmington for a
“RED LOBSTER” Christmas treat………. and there just so happens to be a couple of brg shops, ………

A win, win day

In the world of brgs it seems there is just about one for every size and application so after all my explanations micrometers are out, cup and shaft size measured and much consultation with books
and computer. One is eventually hunted down in Kentucky and is now on the road to me ……. should
be here in 4 days. Better get my bike back as things are progressing so quickly.

12th night arrives! ….. so a full day getting what took a week to put up down and into storage for next
year. Brenda completes upstairs and downstairs trees and associated bits and bobs while I undo
thousands of lights, moving deer, polar bears and reindeer. Finally with aching arms the last of the
herd are humped into the loft on their new bases, boxes stacked and its only 7 pm !

Today all the fun and games of e-bay, photographing and listing and then watching for bids or not,
and answering questions from those that can’t read ! Now this ebaying game can be good fun and
looking at the huge load of TY250A  crap that is currently on I’m amazed that any of it would sell. It
seems to me there are several breakers in Utah who just take these bikes to pieces and sell the
parts at ridiculous prices without ever cleaning anything!  For my part the morning was spent
cleaning, then the photo shoot, then all the photo resizing and finally the listings…… all complete by
7.30 pm and now I have 20 rods in the water waiting to see what I catch. This morning 3 bites so the
Ossa forks, bash plate, and axle have bids… yipee!

Task of the day is first have a look at an annoying new tube which keeps losing air?  Tube out and in
the huge laundry room sink……. no bubbles ?  I can only assume as I’ve had two of these NEW tubes
from the same batch that there was some swarf on the edge of the valve core and now after much
pumping that has gone and the valve is seating correctly. I’ll leave them for a few hours before
refitting.

Flush with the over night success time to drag out the four frames and list them. Frames seldom sell
as it usually costs more to ship them than they sell for, but hope springs eternal, nothing ventured,
nothing gained. Also have more workshop stands than I know what to do with so I’ll put a couple of
those on as well.

Time for a couple of high dollar items, first the hi-tech Enfield wheel I bought a few years back and
never used as it was the same weight as the full width original ! Second on the block a set of brand
NEW 32 mm Cerianis that cost an arm and a leg and then I had the stem machined to fit the Tiger
Cub and an axle made to take a Yam front wheel. While that work was being done I fitted the BSA
B50 forks and have been more than happy with the set up.

The fishing continued and within minutes of listing these forks the number changes to GREEN ! and
someone has bitten immediately at the $249.99 starting price !!! This should be good, as one day on
there are a LOT of watchers so we might end up with a price war next Saturday !! …… and just to prove
me wrong an email from the UK asking how much to ship a TY175 frame ???? Probably $100 to ship
and $25 for the frame…. we will see.

With initial preparation done to the Fantic wheel and forks time to see whether this idea will all come together?  On a cold New Year’s Eve, Shadetree braved the workshop temps once more and humped
the Enfield onto the stand.

Unridden and dusty, the machine is surveyed for leaks for which the brand is famous. Nothing too
obvious so let the deconstruction begin. First remove the number plate with the now almost obselete
Ahrma regulation sticker, brake cable, and front wheel.  Off comes the mudguard …… my, it feels good
to be weilding spanners again!

Out of curiosity its off with the tank and seat and a quick wipe down to make it look pretty in its near
naked state. Tomorrow it will be the forks, and then some serious weighing of what we had and what
“weight watchers” is proposing. First up refit a tire on the Fantic wheel and as they tell me these
brakes are shit hot (not that I envisage nose wheelieing the Enfield) and these wheels have TWO
security bolts in the front to presumably stop the “creep” caused by these powerful brakes.

The forks fit ! Always a surprize when you find that the Enfield Gun Company actually made their forks
35mm back in the 50’s so a good start to the morning. Now its wheel and tire time and then the official
weigh in.

New tire and tube fitted and weighed, now loosely assemble, and I see my good friend Steve has reassembled the brake plate incorrectly (but he did do a nice job of cleaning). The wheel is in, it spins
nicely on the new bearings but has a “bit” of a wobble !!! …. but it doesn’t hit the fork legs so all is well,
just need to find a distance piece to substitute for where the speedo drive used to live…. must have
something that will do ?

So looking good trying to reduce a Premier Heavyweight to a Premier Lightweight (some hope!!)

Well thats carved another 11 lbs off the all up weight which started life somewhere in GB at around
309 lbs according to the owners manual. After the initial build with all the frame alterations, headstock angle, and a Yam back wheel, alloy tank, billet yokes etc I had changed the wheelbase from close on
56″ down to 51″ and raised the ground clearance from 5.5″ to 12″….. “El Compacto”…… the weight had
gone from 309 down to 280 so now with this mod I’m under 270,……. bike’s getting lighter as well!

This “lightweight” works motor + gearbox weighs 120lbs !!

Yipee! its going to work! ……well next up a full carb clean and tune up and perhaps change the engine
treacle known as HD SAE 50. Need to order the oil seals and fork wipers and a genuine Fantic front
brake cable.

Meanwhile while watching the New Year’s Eve fireworks on TV a couple of sneaky applications of
Solvol, and here are the very pleasing results to the TY Monos.

    Hi Tony you are a lucky so and so that the forks went straight in, but I suspect they are not the original Enfield yokes. What about travel? Will the mudguard clear the downtube on full compression with fork springs removed?? Last one I built had to be modified. Happy spanner time, Dick

FORK THOUGHTS

As the year comes to an end the first tasks of rebuilding bikes are under way. The Fantic wheel is
clean and ready for new bearings. Searches are being made to source the TY mono or YZ front wheel
that will adorne Superglitz  and both sets of red legs are having the paint removed. There is also an
ever growing parts list to restock the workshop after a year off.

My old paint remover can gave up the ghost so now armed will a “new” paste we will see how many
attempts this will take to get the forks back to bare alloy.

A lot of unknowns at this stage as to whether all my proposed changes will fit ? Well we know they
can be made to fit but I’m hoping I can do them without having to machine parts or make changes that
I can’t reverse if I don’t like the results.

Seems the YZ wheels are the same as the TY Mono so now its down to headstock bearings and
stem length. The TY monos were fitted with taper roller brgs but of course I have the brgs but not the
cup that fits in the frame. Might have to go back to balls which I must confess I have never had a
problem with. Need to measure the Mono versus the Twinshock set up and see if any problems are
obvious.

Despite the cold I need to hump the Enfield up on the ramp and start dismantling and see where
that leads. Then dismantle both sets of forks. I’m reading that the TY Monos are difficult although I
really can’t see why they should be any different from any other fork…… we will see.

Meanwhile the paste is eating the paint and I think one final application will be enough and then
some mild polishing to see if we stay alloy or repaint.

With the paint mostly off its easy to see why they painted fork legs in the 80’s ? Must be cost, pure and
simple, as the finish on both sets is “rough” cast so much cheaper to paint than have polished to a
chrome like finish. …….. a few hours later they look like this and we will soon move on to the magic
Solvol and see how they come up.

Better, but still a way to go

The TY yokes polished up nicely so just some checking against an old frame to see how they can
be fitted. Also a good time to look at what parts I have left from the Yam building days.

Provisional restocking list :

Brake cables for TY and Fantic hubs
Yellow heat shrink
Yellow universal or Gas Gas 125/200 front fender/mudguard
3 sets Doherty grips
Wheel bearings
Brake shoes
2 sets Magical fork springs
Paints
Polishing kits

Fork oil seals and wipers

Sherlock’s initial investigation reveals that the Yam stem lengths are the same, upper brg and other hardware both the same but the lower bearing is a different diameter as is the lower portion of the
stem on the Mono set up. To my untrained eye the easiest option would seem to be a new lower
bearing plate or turn down an old stem to fit in the mono bottom yoke which on second thoughts
might be an even better idea, and perhaps the easiest and cheapest option.

Last Friday of the year and time to slip into town, get a couple of polishers and some wire wool and
find  two 6202 brgs for the Fantic wheel. Napa has some but the price is ridiculous so move on and
get some at a much better price at the Honda dealership. They also point me in the right direction for
“The best machinist in Cortez” but he isn’t there but they do give me his cell so more pieces of the
jig-saw come together.

Back home the brgs go in so another one of the jobs complete…….. and remember get the right tools
for the job. 10 mins with them or countless hours of frustration with screwdrivers and scissors and
an equal ammount of time spent grovelling around on the floor trying to find that bloody circlip that
pinged off at moment critique!

Back to the forks and the Fantics get their first ever dose of Solvol. Better, but not perfect so a few more applications to go. The TY monos had some abuse from previous owners who seemed to have a
passion for colliding with large rocks of the granite kind.

More hours of fingerprint removing with the buffer and the forks are almost blemish free and my
fingers sure are shiney! These (the fork legs that is) will now be taken into “the warmth and pleasure
of the inn” where they can be polished while watching TV.

“C’mon pilgrim get on yer bike, we’re going West and we got a lot to do” 

With over 2200 hits on Trials Central, 54 comments, and almost as many on this blog it does seem
that for the most part the Ahrma “true” trials membership is totally dissatisfied with the lame duck
schedule that is currently on offer.

While waiting for the RMTA to come out with their series we have explored the possibility of an ITSA
WEST chapter and so far things look very favourable in all directions. Rather than start a whole new
vintage org it seems sensible to expand Bob Ginder’s empire and come under the umbrella of an
AMA sanctioned body and give those current ITSA members more places to ride and enjoy true trials
without all the hassle and nonsense of combined events and ….. dare I say it, not having to wait until
some other discipline has finished before WE can start.

So at this early stage from the mainstay org we have myself, Ed, and John Holbrook on board with
Jimmy Allison in NM also keen and some riders in SOCAL who were disenchanted when Ahrma
rejected all their proposed work for an event.

Rivers, rocks, mud and banks in August ? …. it must be Casper!

Looking at other venues first I would personally like to see Casper in there within whatever schedule
we devise as it must be one of the best places in the USA with perfect vintage sections. It has been
done before when “non Ahrma members” rode in a combined event, in fact 2008 was the year when
Bob held one of these at his place in TN.

Locally I have Bull Hollow on my doorstep just across the CO/UT state line and I think this land is
perfect for an ITSA 2 day event. Ed has a 5 year BLM piece of land at Turkey Rock CO and NM had a
great event to finish the year in November at Roswell where Jimmy is. Right here in Dolores I can
approach the Town Manager to see if we can use their land and the adjacent BLM offering for a week long Vintage Trials School culminating in an ITSA weekend. We might even be able to ride the bikes
in the town and have a section or two at the town watering hole if the Sherrifs can be persuaded. Well
with just those we have 8 events plus Fred and Dan’s Casper event and we haven’t even contacted
the So Cal riders for their input.

Not wanting 2012 to be TOO big as a starter a schedule might go something along these lines:

April            SoCal

June           Bull Hollow

July             Turkey Rock

Aug/Sep     Casper

Oct              Dolores + Trials Camp

Nov             Roswell

……. and for the future we still have Tucker Ranch Cotopaxi Co, the Sipapu Ski Area in NM and two
really good sites in AZ at Alto Pit near Prescott and Holbrook on I40. So time to hitch up the wagons
and roll into 2012 aboard the ITSA West train.

Twas the afternoon before Christmas Eve, and nothing did stir, the wife was at work and the dogs
were all here.

Schools were all closed and no driving was needed, so time for some Solvol and necessary cleaning.

He grabbed the wheel he wanted to fettle, but my God it was cold, and his hand stuck to the metal.

The spokes are corroded but beautifully laced, the bearings are crap and must be replaced.

Wire wool and Emery were on hand at the ready, as Startrek repeats played on the telly.

Spoke by spoke they are polished, each to perfection, the bearings alas, only fit for rejection !

With 36 done, both fore and aft, Shadetree cries “more coffee at last.”

On raising his head, he sees a new trick, now where’s the camera?  “I must have a pic.”

The cat and the dog have now become one, well Luna and Cadbury, isn’t this fun?

More Solvol and cloths are brought to the fight, and soon the rim is gleaming and bright.

But now it’s the season and time for a beer, so off to the brewery to quoff Christmas Cheer,

a carol or two brings on a tear, and to all,  “MERRY  CHRISTMAS and a HAPPY NEW YEAR”

So, save for the bearings the wheel is done and now time to move on to the two sets of forks that were
both sprayed in period red. I can never understand why anyone paints alloy! They were both dragged in
from the workshop which is now off limits as the temps are below common sense working levels. The laundry room will soon rejoice to the smell of paint remover.

News of other wheels for the TY set looks like an early YZ wheel will fit ? it would seem logical that
Yamaha would use the same wheel when they came back to trials bike building for those TY air
cooled monos.  Ed tells me he knows a man who swopped out his drum mono wheel for a disc
version and Jimmy Allison says he has YZ wheels…….. so looking good here.

Christmas Eve and other than some wrapping I’m ready. An evening of golden oldies with Chevy
Chase in Christmas Vacation, always good especially the lights! and then Wonderful Life to finish the
night.

A surprize visit from Santa

Christmas Day and up early and light a roaring fire and get the carols on. Presents by the fire this
year and Santa was very good to me, with a new Canon camera and lots of other goodies to delight.

Now the ritual begins and very soon stuffing is done, bird washed and prepped and ready for the
oven. Dogs walked, tons of firewood hauled in and now veggie time. Spuds and parsnips first then
the bullet hard swede and finally leeks and brussel sprouts. Bird in, Christmas cocktails poured the
duty global phones calls are made.

Christmas lights, decorations, cards and presents all done, save for the wrapping ritual, the mind is
already thinking holy grails, bikes, bikes and more bikes with modifications that no longer need to
comply with Ahrma regulations.

First on the list is to find a TY mono front wheel from the 80’s. I have everything else I need to change
the front end of my TY250A  Superglitz but I’m missing that front wheel ! Anybody who has one sitting
around that needs a good home please let me know.

Once a wheel is found the rest can go straight on. Engine out and redetailed, in yellow and black,
all tubes replaced in yellow  and all cables “yellowed” for the final effect. The forks of course are not
staying red, and maybe some of those magical springs ?

All the parts for the Enfield are here and as soon as school closes for Christmas I shall be in the
workshop working on that one. Should be interesting to see what the weight savings are and if the
fork action is a quantum jump ahead, again might fit some magicals in these.

Cub wise not very much to be done other than refreshing all the oils as it didn’t get a solitary ride last season. It does need a new clutch cable as I remember!

Today Ed and Evelyn are at the RMTA meeting so I await news with interest as to what events are on
the table and how they will run. Even without the RM input it does seem from all your comments that
ITSA is the way to go and while I have no intention of doing an “Ed” and driving 20,000 miles a year
and spending litterally weeks at various venues setting sections and putting up loop marking when
nobody stepped up for Trialsmaster duties I would expect to be doing my good share of the work
setting up ITSA West if that’s what the customer wants. We could even have that Vintage Trials School
here in Dolores culminating in an ITSA event to round off the week.

Well if the choice is ITSA then maybe time to build up another special? I did see another of the DMW
frames that I used on “Ossamaha” up for grabs but obviously some people have had similar ideas
and the frame was selling at around 1300 GBP !!

I’m thinking of a rolling chasis from one of those RTX things. I did see one that had a Cub engine in it
and a really nice all round job made of it. Something to consider here. I did once have a ride on the
two models. A gentleman in Phoenix had a lock up with about six in it and I tried both. From memory
they weren’t tuned up but they seemed to handle OK for a cheapie…..from memory the forks seemed
a bit frail, but what if some better forks and shocks were added ? and then a decent trials engine ?
again from memory the frame seemed well enough designed and I think you could make most
vintage engines fit with a bit of work…….. who knows it might just be a winner !

I think the frame could take most motors ?

Then of course as I have never ridden one there is the Fantic which all owners tend to rave about.
Might be worth persuading Ed to let me have a test ride on one of his that are tucked away in the

Just prior to Thanksgiving week I get a panic phone call from Lena the Cortez Transportation Director.
As they say in Yorkshire, “There’s trouble up at mill lad” ! It seems that 2 of the regular drivers have
had enough!!

Driver No 1 had a fight on his bus between elementary boys and after stopping the bus and breaking
up the fight the father of one of these children claimed the driver used “unreasonable force” whatever
that might have been!  The driver said he won’t drive that route again, and who can blame him.

Driver No 2  was a caregiver to a little old lady and other than his school bus driving lived with her rent
free, did all her shopping and cooking, and attended to her every need. She unfortunately died in
October and now with settlement of wills, probate and the selling of the home Ben found himself
homeless and unable to sustain life as a single man on just a bus driver’s pay and was therefore
forced to resign.

I have now taken over Ben’s route which was the last one to receive a “new” bus. The School District purchased three new Thomas buses last year and they were numbered 44,45, and 46. 44 and 45 are
71 seaters and were pressed into service straight away while we waited for 46, a 65 seater to arrive.

Two weeks into driving the “new” bus and it is quite delightful with all its new bells and whistles. A
couple of “gotchas” It has auto lights like the Cadilac so you must remember to turn them on for
normal daylight driving and another one is the door switch. The switch is 3 position, open, closed and
a sneaky little mid position. Should it be in the mid selection then when you operate the warning
ambers you get the red stops instead and some very surprized motorists!!

This one’s mine…….. Number 46, well hello Valentino !

The engine compartment is much better than most with all liquid containers, power steering, coolant
and windscreen washer all of a “see through” type so no more dipping fingers in holes and wrestling
with caps. Worst thing about the bus which surprized me is a huge blind spot on the driver’s left side
with the upright pillar and the two huge mirrors.

The 71 seaters have heated driver’s seats whereas mine doesn’t,  extra flashers in the grille, ejection
seat handle flashes on the bumper, and the bigger buses also have a “forced” walk through system
whereby you can’t leave any sleeping child on the bus by not doing your post trip walkthrough.  From
the time you remove the ignition key you have 30 secs to get to the back of the bus and hit the door
switch or every bell, light, warner and horn will go off!! Mine doesn’t have this feature either.

Worst thing about having a new bus is every time that a major activity comes up then it gets stolen
or allocated to the activity and you end up driving an old spare. This can be bloody annoying as we
HAVE two purpose designed activity touring buses sitting waiting!!

Some time ago a gentleman in AZ who had just been to Laguna Seca gave me a Rossi hat, not that
I ever wear baseball caps (ever) but as it was a very expensive souvenir of the race I accepted. I
suppose I could wear it on the last day of school with some antlers as well?…….. time to get out my
CD of the Winchester Cathedral Choir and give the children a blasting of Christmas carols.
